Man's Wreck is Another Man's Treasure SEPTEMBER 2000 In the days before the depression, when there were carriages in need of painting, you could go to Carl Dendorfer to do the job. Later, his carriage painting company evolved into an auto painting company (Klode Auto Painting) located at 12th and Speer, and still later, an auto body and painting company. In 1965, Ronald Dendorfer (Carl Dendorfers son) and his wife Carol founded Klode Salvage Distribution Center, Inc., an insurance salvage pool that has grown to be one of the largest salvage operations in the country. Today, the 70-acre empire on the east side of the Chatfield Reservoir is still all in the family. Rick Dendorfer, Ronalds eldest son, serves as president and CEO. Brian Dendorfer serves as Vice President and COO. Brians wife, Jan, is a divisional manager. And Ronald, well, he hasnt slowed down a bit. You can still him at Klodes, every day, wearing his work clothes and operating heavy equipment, something he prefers over paper work. Carol Dendorfer has the job of managing and processing all the paperwork a huge part of the operation, which includes estimates, towing, storage, titles, reserves, sales procedures and government regulations and confides that her work is never done. Rick and Brian have been very visible in the company for nearly 30 years now, but the fact is, even as children they pitched in and helped whenever they could. Klodes liquidates over 850 vehicles by live auction each week at their Douglas County facility and additional operations in Casper, Wyo., and Montrose, Colo. Their salvage centers are among the top in the nation. What will it be? A Mercedes? A convertible Mustang? How about a Harley Davidson; they auction off motorcycles as well.
